Years before hemp was legal in Kansas, Joel Sandoval was mailing state representatives making the case for it.
A seat at the table
When the Kansas Department of Agriculture worked through the rules that would let Kansas farmers grow industrial hemp, Joel was there — attending the KDA's stakeholder meetings alongside farmers and other Kansans, and giving feedback as the regulations took shape.
Hemp in the ground
Kansas opened its Industrial Hemp Research Program — the state's first legal framework for the crop. Joel applied, was licensed as a grower, and grew hemp himself.

A Kansan through and through
Joel was raised in Stafford, a small town on the plains, and shaped by the values that come with it: hard work, community, and a deep-seated desire to provide for others. He spent 25 years as a technology professional — building systems, solving problems, thinking in data — and he's still at it today.
Somewhere along the way he found that his purpose stretched past the server room, out into the fields and onto the roads of his home state. So he didn't change course. He widened the road.
He has grown the crop himself, under a Kansas state license, in 2019.
His motivation is personal: caring for his own family, and the stories of everyday people who've turned to plant-based wellness looking for a better quality of life. Those stories made the mission real.

K-61 is a real road. A Kansas road. And like all good roads, it carries more than one meaning.
